Manhattan is a cocktail that has been in the spotlight since its birth: According to legend, it was created around 1870 at the "Manhattan Club" in New York by Iain Marshall on the occasion of the reception organized by Jennie Jerome (i.e. Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of Winston Churchill) in honor of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. Its success made the drink very trendy and led people to ask for it, referring to the bar where it was created, the "Manhattan" in fact. Thanks to a very fast word of mouth, the cocktail soon became very popular also in Europe, probably favored by its name, which is a perfect synthesis of the Big Apple in a glass.
