The history of cocktails: Mai Tai
Despite its Polynesian name, the Mai Tai is an American pillar of tiki mixology. It was created in America in the 1940s as the result of an eternal rivalry between two famous American adventurers, Donn Beach and Victor Buergon. After a series of legal battles, it was recognized as the creation of the second, better known as "Trader Vic", who created the Mai Tai in his famous restaurant in California. In fact, Buergon is proven to have mixed the first Mai Tai in 1944, in honor of some friends visiting from Tahiti who, after tasting it, happily exclaimed, "Maita'i roa ae!" - in Polynesian, "Delicious! Not of this world!". After being so renamed, it became one of the most popular cocktails on the American West Coast (and beyond).
